More Americans are Set to Accessorize Their Backyards to Create Outdoor Ambience in 2023

In 2023, at least 80% of American consumers have reported that their outdoor living space is more valuable to them than ever. According to an independent survey by The International Casual Furnishings Association (ICFA), purchases for backyards lined up for this year include new lighting, shade equipment like patio umbrellas, and decor items such as pillows, cushions, and rugs.

The survey indicated that 54% of American consumers are set to buy something new for their decks, yards, and patios this year.

The decision comes two years after the Covid-19 pandemic that motivated people to invest in improving the spaces around their homes, calling for upgrading the outdoor living settings.

Spending more hours in the backyards

The survey also confirmed that more Americans will spend an average of 9 hours per week outdoors in the coming year. This is 2 hours more than what was reported in 2022, according to the survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of the ICFA.

Jackie Hirschhaut doubles up as the vice president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance and the executive director of its outdoor division, ICFA. Speaking during the release of the report, Jackie said:

“In addition to shopping for new pieces of furniture, consumers ranked lighting and accessories as the easiest ways to make their outdoor living spaces more stylish….These easy-to-add enhancements make it more conducive to spending time outdoors, which people are doing more and more each year, as work from home becomes more normalized and the home has new and different meanings in our lives.”

According to the 2023 ICFA report, 36% of consumers will prioritize upgrading their outdoor lighting, while 27% said they will add shade items such as pergolas, umbrellas, and awnings. Another 26% of consumers said they would buy new pillows, cushions, and rugs, similar to those who intend to upgrade their fireplaces, flooring, seating sofas, water features, outdoor kitchens, and bars.
